Michael Patrick Murphy, Placer County LP Vice Chair, Candidate for the CA Assembly District 4
23rd of October, 2006.

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to meet folks at the Auburn Community Festival. We had record registrations and interest in the Libertarian Party. My own campaign took on new supporters like never before. There were still those occasional "Republican Faithful," that came to talk a little politics and one man stood out in my mind. Of course our stand on free agency regarding abortions sends most of these faithful running, but Alicia was working the booth and she is in the Christian Adventure Church congregation as well. I think this one fellow was trying to reconcile that. He had some understanding of history and mentioned that war is sometimes justified by Jesus' actions in the Jewish Temple. To me, that was as much of a stretch as Doolittle virtually calling his opponent, Charlie Brown, a Man-Boy Love supporter.

Such loose associations could beg the question as to why Republicans support a political party that massacred the American Indian and a third of the Philippine people in the name of God. Somehow, I don't think that was really God's position on those adventures and I don't think our escapades in Iraq are his position either. Never-the-less, the local Republican flock seems to think God is a Republican despite tremendous evidence that he is actually a Libertarian. After all, he didn't make us good, he simply gave us free will. It is these particular Republicans that are not only traitors to the Constitution of the United States of America, but are doing the devil's work in such far away places as Afghanistan, Haiti, Indonesia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, and in many, many other places. The Democrats have been equal participants in such travesties of justice. None of it is very Christ like. Meanwhile, the Libertarians are the live and let live party. People are not forced to be good Christians. They get to choose. Libertarians don't force other countries to do our bidding. We are also less likely to cast stones (I am the exception). Yes, I'm quite sure that God is a registered Libertarian.

Sadly, the modern commercial press has been complicit. Today I read the Bee on the Internet as it proclaimed endorsements of both Republican and Democratic candidates. Endorsing is in itself a travesty when the press does it. Almost all of the endorsements are for terrible candidates, on the take from developers and special interests, claiming Republican or Democratic righteousness. Take Roseville City Councilman, Rocky Rockholm, who is running for Placer County Supervisor, as one example of a candidate that the Bee supports. After his escapades on the Roseville City Council, nobody in their right mind would elect him to the County Supervisors where he would undoubtedly become one of the worst in its history. Even when a candidate offers to actually do the job he was intended to do, it is unlikely that the Bee would recognize the candidate. After all, the Bee all but hid alternative candidates that were not Republican or Democrat. This is typical of a press that no longer does its job. It no longer informs the people of important world events and doesn't offer a level playing field for candidates. It is more of a sad fashion statement, like cuffed bell bottoms or edible underwear, that does not deserve our support, both financially or in electing its endorsees. (I must say that I am not sure about the edible underwear.)

America is working on the declining side of its empire. The government is a failed state, deeply in debt, and at a loss for principles. On 911 we had the sympathy vote of the world. The world could almost forgive us our past sins and transgressions. The U.S. government, rather than taking the opportunity to become the righteous nation, instead threw away the opportunity. With the complicit help of the corporate media, it funneled our anger and fears into an agenda that would leave us as the world's most hated nation. In our fight against terrorism, we have become the terrorists by using bombs and phosphorus weapons and using Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo tactics. We degenerated. We bred terrorists. And as my Christian acquaintance pointed out, we have now justified terrorism through our religion. We pushed target nations into developing their nuclear programs and have lost any respect we had left in the United Nations. In the end, we only have borrowed money to throw around to achieve our government's goals. We squandered the moment and set ourselves on the fast track to Armageddon. There were those that profited. Quarterly statements were enhanced for some companies. Boeing survived what would have otherwise been certain bankruptcy. As a whole though, it is a course that I fear we cannot change instantly and must endure for possibly way beyond our own lifetimes. I ask myself, "Was this the goal of this administration all along? Is this what Bush's membership in the Skull and Bones Society at Yale is all about? Would Jesus be a Bonesman?"

This has all come about through the actions or inactions of our people and a government run by Republicans and Democrats that disregarded American principles and ideals and did an end run around the sheep, lemmings and ostriches that would sacrifice all to support the system. Some would give their own lives willingly and unwillingly. Those that planned the war are world class criminals now, but the world is too afraid to prosecute such a powerful military adversary. Still, the European Union and China are preparing for the day when they will have to. So is Iran and North Korea. They saw what happened when Iraq disarmed itself and they certainly don't want to let it happen to them. It is no longer a matter of whether they are better than us, but a matter of whether we have become any better than them. We lost the moral high ground a long, long time ago.

The proxy wars that started between the U.S. and Soviet Union are now continued against other countries. The horsemen of the apocalypse are still unleashed. I remember when we used to chastise communism because it demanded that the whole world be communist to allow it to fully function. Now, we in the west are determined that the whole world become capitalist like us. This is hypocritical for a second reason. The fact is that we have actually become communist. We don't even have a free market economy any more. It is highly regulated and dysfunctional. Our personal debt is out of this world and our government debt, to support our addictions, is out of this universe. We spend half of our incomes on redistribution of the wealth government programs here in the United States. It may be more elegant than the Soviet System, in part because we borrowed so much to live beyond our means, but it is none-the-less, still communism.

You will recall that communists don't believe in God. If they do, they are more correctly called Christian Socialists, which is simply another name for neo-conservatives. They stand for the same thing, communism under God.

I'm here to tell you that God is neither a communist, nor a Republican. Jesus did not steal from one man and give it to another. He did not carry an M-16 under his arm. He did not pull the switch on the electric chair and he didn't do pre-emptive military strikes.

As Christians have forsaken their bible in favor of a King supposedly appointed by God, Americans have forsaken their Constitution in favor of CIA propaganda and a quest for an American run, capitalist Empire. We are killing and dying on behalf of ignorance and inaction. The devil loves war, crime and debt. He loves ignorance and inaction. He loves communism. We can't undo what we have done. We will live with the consequences and unfortunately, it will probably get worse before it gets better. I would remind Christians that as Shakespeare said, "the primrose path to hell is paved with good intentions."

Like smoking, drinking and other bad habits, dumping our ignorance and support for Democrats and Republicans must not be put on hold. We are spiraling downward into the darkness and every minute we procrastinate could means years in recovery. World leadership comes at a price. Freedom isn't free. Let's put the brakes on now and follow the designs of our forefathers and if you are so inclined, the teachings of your prophets. Be vigilant and aware that disinformation in the church and press is nothing new. Think about the Inquisition and the Salem Witch trials. They all involved government and church interaction. At the time, the people supported it, as they did Adolf Hitler in his day. It seems the Devil never takes a day off. Standing tall won't be easy for anesthetized Americans. For most of us it means learning to crawl, then walk, then run. Shangrila wasn't built in a day, but it will never be built if we never even start.

NOTE: For those that took me a little too seriously, Michael Patrick Murphy is neither a Christian, nor a proponent of the idea that God is a Libertarian. However, he has read the Bible, among other religious works.
