Michael MurphyWhat are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?

I've heard from one local Republican Supervisor, running for Assembly, that the CA legislature is still dominated by liberal democrats hooked on higher taxes and big government programs. This is despite years of Placer County Republican Assemblymen and Senators. We can fix that!

As Republicans, they've been working tirelessly for years against far too many Democrats in our State Legislature. They've achieved almost nothing. Zilch! Nada!

It's time to sober up Placer County. You can't convert the folks of California into a bunch of pre-emptive bombing, border locking, abortion and gay bashing, puritanical Republicans. You just can't do it. Why? Because Californians are smarter than that and because many of them think your Party has been acting a little peculiar. You keep trying the same old tired things over and over again and keep expecting different results. That's insanity and any scientist, from Kinsey on forward knows that you must have some pent up aggressions, but what are you doing to improve the state? Again, not much. In fact, socialists have been making inroads into Placer County by calling themselves Republicans. All one has to do is look at what passes within the local city councils and among the Placer County Supervisors. I challenge anyone to attend a meeting or two and you'll see what I mean. You're "War on Democrats" has been backfiring on you. Instead of you winning them over, they've been winning you over!

So what are you doing the rest of your life?

How about saving Placer County and the great State of California? I'm sure you must be wondering how I would do that.

To illustrate my point, I'm going to tell you about an old tennis story . First, you need to understand that the initial goal of a tennis game is to learn to hit the ball deep down the middle. There are various reasons for this that I won't get into now.

Anyway, some of my fellow tennis instructors we're getting impatient with students that kept on hitting the ball into the left fence. "Hit the ball down the blasted middle!" they'd say.

I said to those unhappy instructors, "give 'em to me," and they did. Turning to the frustrated "left fence" students, I'd say, "I want you to aim way over there at the right fence."

They'd look at me perplexed, "I thought I was supposed to aim down the middle?"

"Trust me," I'd say. Sure enough, on their first attempt, rather than the ball go where they were aiming, towards the right fence, the ball would instead travel in the intended direction, right down the middle.

The students would be happy. The frustrated instructors would be happy and I'd be happy. You can't do much better than that.

When Republicans tell Democrats to compromise in the middle, the ball never ends up in their court and they always lose the game. Most Republicans have no trouble understanding when I tell them that Democrats are blind in their "right" eye. But they'd just as soon hit me in the nose than to admit that they are blind in their own "left" eyes! Back to another losing match at the capitol, they would stride.

I like to think that not only would Libertarians be more successful than Republicans at balancing the State budget, stopping waste and inefficiency and getting the State to limit themselves to only a few projects that they can do well, but we will go into politics with both eyes wide open. We will start to win some matches.

We've been converting Democrats and Republicans for years. Third Parties are gaining acceptance as Republican and Democratic registrations have been beginning a big per capita decline. The public has realized this for some time, but too many have kept on voting for incumbents and the lesser of two evils and things have kept on getting worse rather than better. In fact, Schwarzennegar's biggest mistake was coming to the table as a Republican. He was doomed to fail, as most Republicans do at the state level. The Democrats laid CA bear traps and the Republicans walked right into them as usual.

In the end, the public are the ones that have been truly frustrated. The problem is that the two parties haven't been addressing that. They are too busy grandstanding and ruining our state. I'm quite sure the Founding Fathers of California are turning in their graves!

Since what you've been doing hasn't been working, why not try a different approach. Swallow your pride and let a few Libertarians into the Legislature. I guarantee better results, even by Republican standards and quite possibly by Democratic standards as well. The time has come for a little social tolerance and fiscal responsibility and that's what Libertarians do better than anyone else. We certainly couldn't do any worse.

No more left and right, just "on track." That's my prescription for the new California. Now let's see who's listening.
